A small musing written for 11.11.11.11

Since that day she lived alone and silent. At the sound of gunfire or sudden explosions in the night she left her bed and crept to the safe corner of the room and crouched head down, hugging her knees.

This night was no exception. A sudden spatter of spiteful bullets looking for softness to enter, to destroy and a half heard shout wakened her. In her corner she trembled while in her mind the wild wind blew the tattered memories of blood, bone, brain round and around her head. A plait of hair, a tied remembered ribbon; a tiny body torn inside out.

When it was light, she went to the door opened it and looked into the yard. One of the soldiers had come through the broken wall and sheltered in the safe corner. She watched him, occasionally he jerked and trembled.

‘Not all inside out’ she thought. ‘He still has a shape, but the blood on his stomach says inside out?

Time passed as she watched him, he twitched and in her head the wild wind still blew. The day unfolded and grew warmer; his tongue searched his lips for water.

She turned and went in, filled a mug with water and dampened a cloth. She knelt and wiped his face gently, his sad green eyes opened briefly and blindly. She wet his lips. He was young, strong and she neither knew nor cared to which side he belonged.

He moved his hand searching and she let him find her hand. She cradled his head onto her lap, stroking the soft blond hair with her free hand.

‘There, there’ she whispered occasionally ‘There, there’

He held onto life and she held onto death, keeping each other company as the day passed.

Thank you both for your kind remarks. The weather is very sad and grey here this morning.

As always the bard perfectly describes our feelings for us

"A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head ..."

Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who'll volunteer to come
To 'list and fight the foe today.
Over the hills and far away.
