Blomkamp Back on the Rumor Mill, MGM Coming Around

I still hope Peter Jackson is involved or it won't be the same.

Looks like all of the actor unions are calling for a blockade of this film.....

(Forwarding from the Buffs site)

"Variety reported today that the seven major actor’s unions have told members
not to work on “The Hobbit” due to the refusal of producers of the feature
film to sign a deal with local New Zealand performers. A SAG (Screen Actor’s
Guild) Member Alert published on SAG’s website yesterday states:
“Members of Canadian Actors Equity, US Actors Equity, the Screen Actors
Guild, UK Actors Equity, the American Federation of Television and Radio
Artists, the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (Australia) and the
Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists are advised not to
accept work on this non-union production. If you are contacted to be engaged
on The Hobbit please notify your union immediately.”
The alert comes after repeated attempts by Australian actor’s union, the
Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance (Alliance), to negotiate minimum wages
and other working conditions for New Zealand actors who are currently not
unionized. The International Federation of Actors (FIA) finally stepped in
to urge their affiliates worldwide to flat out refuse to work on “The
Hobbit” in a show of solidarity for their New Zealand counterparts. With
offers to actors rumored to be “imminent,” the initiative is undoubtedly
timed to put maximum pressure on the film-makers to negotiate. It remains
to be seen whether playing what they think is their strongest hand now will
have the results the FIA desires.

Finally, we hear it from the horse’s mouth (Peter Jackson). In an official interview with EmpireOnline, Jackson discusses the studio saga, saying :

“We’ve seen these reports before, reports saying there was going to be a green light in a couple of days — well, a week’s gone by and there isn’t one,” adds Jackson. “You can’t believe everything you read. There is only one thing you want to believe and that’s when the studio announces a greenlight. As far as I’m aware that’s not going to be today. I keep hearing positive things. Everyone’s working very hard. There’s a lot of people at Warner Bros. who are working around the clock trying to manoeuvre through the MGM complexities. MGM is a company that is about to go bankrupt and in a way they are about to take The Hobbit into bankruptcy hell with them when they go down. Warners are trying to extract The Hobbit out of the bankruptcy hell before it happens. It is just so complicated I can’t even put my head into it. It’s all to do with American copyright laws, bankruptcy laws. A lot of Warner Bros. lawyers are working round the clock at the moment trying to make it happen so let’s see.”

The Premiere is in full swing at the moment. so far nearly three hours of red carpet interviews by two of the main channels here in NZ.

Martin Freeman looks soooo different from his character Bilbo Bagins. Cate Blanchard looks beautiful. Peter jackson walked the red carpet with his daughter (age 16) she is a very poised young lady. Fran Jackson was apparently too shy to do it. Haven't see Orlando Bloom or "Frodo" yet but they are apparently on their way.

Biggest suprise for me was seeing Barry Humphries. Didn't know he is playing the Goblin King. For people who don't know Barry is famous down here for his role as "Dame Edna Everidge" from Moonie Ponds Australia. Which he has played very successfully for many years

Lots of twitters from around the world appearing on the screen. Jackson talking about the Premieres in London and New York I think later on this week.

Thanks Shell, made me feel I was there! Barry Humphries is certainly well known and much loved in the U.K., where Dame Edna was a national institution, at least when I left 10 years ago.

Yes Dame Edna and her "Glads" will be sadly missed. She recently had her "farewell" tour here in NZ. It is always a bit of a surprise to see her "out of Drag" and as "The Goblin King" well that's going to be interesting. She has lost a lot of weight after being on the "Jenny Craig" diet.

James Nesbitt. the English actor was great he brought his family to live down here while they were filming and he said it was the best thing he ever did - they loved it.

It will also be interesting to see how "Gollum" will look as the book "The Hobbit" was the first one in the series and Gollum hadn't quite morphed into the character as he was seen in the Lord of the Rings. Andy Serkis by the way looks younger than ever.

Elijah Wood was beaming all over he was looking very pleased to be back here again.
