Sharpe Quotes or Passages

Post by rocknrollheart49 » Sun Nov 25, 2007 7:51 am

This has been done on other forums so thought it would be fun to include in the Sharpe's Books Topics

This is from the book Sharpe's Escape. I dont own the book but checked it out from our local library. To be honest, it's been a while since I read Escape so I dont remember all of the plot but loved this passage as it is so typical of Richard Sharpe:

Colonel Lawford is addressing Sharpe:

"Lieutenant Slingsby", the Colonel said, "tells me that you insulted him. That you invited him to a duel. That you called him illegitimate. That you swore at him."

Sharpe cast his mind back to the brief confrontation on the ridge's forward slope and after he had pulled the company out of the French panic. "I doubt I called him illegitimate, sir." he said. "I wouldn't use that sort of word. I probably called him a bastard."

:-D got to love Sharpe's attitude!

Sharpe quotes

Yes, yes, I like this one and I like your idea to offer good lines from the books! Although my English is not good enough to catch all the puns and jokes, I do enjoy most of them and, well, it is real "spice" of all the stories! I think you have set a good place to show more - I have got one now but I want to put it down properly and i haven´t got the book here. But I will be back. Thank you, this is GREAT!

Great idea.

Here are two from Sharpe's Revenge(I just read the book again recently):

Nairn: "... I trust Jane is well?"
Sharpe: "Indeed, sir."

Sharpe's tone cause Nairn to give the rifleman and amused look "Do I detect that you are in marital bad odour, Sharpe?"

"I stink,sir"

....... same book - Sharpe and Frederickson discussing marriage and the man who married the "pig-faced woman"...

"... it would be like going to bed with Sargeant Harper" Frederickson grimaced.

Sharpe smiled, "You've never been tempted William?'

"By Sergeant Harper? Don't be impertinent."

I like this more and more! Yesterday I received Sharpe´s Skirmish (the postage was twice a price of this thin book) and finished it in one sitting! There I found a nice and very typical exchange between Sharpe and Harper:
"Are we expecting trouble?" Harper asked.
"No, Pat," Sharpe said. "Soft duty."
"Soft duty, eh? Then why give it to you?"

Of course there was trouble... Situated after Sword.

Just try to visualise this moment from the Company book - there is Harry Price, slightly "tired" , and our Patrick Harper, before an attack at C.Rodrigues:
Price:"Wake me when glory calls."
Harper: "Yes, sir. Which one´s glory?"

From short story - Sharpe's Ransom
Sharpe in the farm with Lucille...

"He hurried to the kitchen where, still naked, he stooped to riddle the stove..."
"Bonjour monsieur " Marie the old woman who was the last house servant left peered at him from the larder.
"You're up early" Sharpe said snatching his shirt to hide his nakedness.
"The one who rises early gets to see the best sights" the old lady said.

Sharpe's Regiment -

Sharpe and Harper trying to sleep on dirty straw:

Harper: You awake
Sharpe: Yes
Harper: What are you thinking of?
Sharpe: Women. Helene.
Harper chuckled: They come and go, eh?

Re-reading Sharpe brings nice rewards:
Sharpe:"What is it you say, Sergeant?"
"Sir?" (Harper, of course)
"God save Ireland? Not a chance. He´s got his hands full copying with Spain!"
(Sharpe´s Eagle - Spanish infantry panicked at Talavera)

More from Havoc:
He (Sharpe) wanted the dragoons to fire at him, not at his men.
"They´ll bloody kill you!" Harpwe said.
"Maybe they´ll turn and run, " Sharpe called back.
"God save Ireland," Harper said, "and why would they do that?"
" Bacuse God wears a green jacket," Sharpe snarled, "of course."

I am back - two ones from Havoc:
"Jesus,Mary and Joseph,"Harper said, making the sign of the cross.
"I have never seen such a huge building!"
He gazed in awe down the shadowed corridor.
"How many bloody priests does a country need?"
"Depends how many sinners there are, " Sharpe said,"and now we search the place."

"What on earth are the Rifles doing here?"
"First on the field," Sharpe quoted the regiment´s favourite boast," and last off it."

Here is one from Escape. Slingsby, Sharpe, Harper after a French attack .
"You still have my horse, Sharpe?" Slingsby demanded.
"Not here,"Sharpe said, and Harper made a choking sound which he turned into a cough.//the horse ran after Sharpe dismounted unvoluntarily, not that Slingsby knows that//
"You said something, Sergeant Harper?" Slingsby demanded crisply.
"Smoke in my throat, sir," Harper said. "It catches something dreadful, sir. I was always a sickly child, sir, on account of the peat smoke in our cottage. My mother made me slep outside, God rest her soul, until the wolves came for me."
"Wolves?" Slingsby sounded cautious.
"Three of them, sir, big as you´d like, with slobbery great tongues the colour of your coat, sir, and I had to sleep inside after that, and I just coughed my way through the nights. It was all that smoke, see?"
"Your parents should have built a chimney," Slingsby said disapprovingly.
"Now why didn´t we think of that?" Harper enquired innocently and Sharpe laughed aoud, earning a vicious look from the Lieutenent.

I also laughed aloud and yes, I am still laughing

I just finished Sharpe´s Havoc (and I really loved it btw) and found some good and lovely one :-D

Hogan´s reply after Sharpe asked if to rescue Kate.

"In the short time I´ve known you, Richard" he said, "I´ve noticed you possess a lamentable tendency to put on shining armour and look for ladies to rescue. King Arthur, God rest his soul, would have loved you. He´d have had you fitghting every evil knight in the forest."

Yeeeessssss give Richard Sharpe a shining armour and who needs Lancelot?
